COAF Field Team Vlog #20– “Lower Illinois River Trout Fishing” #flyfishing

Finally made it to the Lower Illinois River for some Rainbow Trout Fishing. Had a great time scouting the river and seeing new places! Although it was tough fishing, we did manage to catch a fish or  two.

First Rainbow Trout was in the Special Regulation Zone (also referred to the “Watts” area); it went about 12″ so we had to let it go. Next fish was a White Bass that we let go. Then, after a few missed hook sets, caught a Rainbow Trout that went about 11″ and another that went 14″. We were able to keep them for dinner since we were no longer in the “Watts” area.

Also, did see a couple of nice looking trout but neither were willing to strike. And then, later in the day – late afternoon/early evening, did see others doing well catching them with fishing flies!

Do hope to fish the area again.

More Kayak Fishing at Texoma... #kayakfishing

Cooler temps this morning but did make the run to Texoma and put in a Spillway Ramp. Had one school pass and was able to catch one Striper. Later, worked a school of shad and was able to catch a Gaspergou. All was quiet, trolling, jigging, and sight casting but no more schools breaking the surface like the other two trips. However, did get one more Striper while casting to point. Still working on the video; will get it out in the next few days. Kayak Fishing | Lake Lavon | Lavonia South Boat Ramp

Put in at Lake Lavon’s Lavonia South Ramp for some kayak fishing. Plan was to catch a few fish for a soup recipe – specifically, yellow bass as well as anything else that was legal size! Went with Nightcrawlers and caught a few, then caught a few more bottom bouncing slab and jig rigs! Do check back for the soup recipe and the next day’s trip kayak fishing Clear Lake Park on Lavon!

Only One at Brockdale This Round

Late start of the three day weekend. Had to tie up some loose ends before starting the Labor Day Weekend. Did make it to Brockdale this round. Used a Switch Rod and a Crappie Jig and caught nothing after an hour. Then as is got dark,had a little White Bass strike. Fun stuff…! Only one just as it got dark!

Fishing the Trinity River with the EmmRod Fly Rod! #emmrod

Liked the EmmRod Kayak King for fishing the local pond for Catfish. Very convenient to carry around or keep in the little pickup truck. Ordered the Fly Rod, arrived yesterday but was not able to fish it till today. Had to make a run to Fort Worth, so brought the EmmRod Fly Rod and several Near Deere fishing flies just in case we had a chance at fishing today. Was able to fish with it on the Trinity River in Fort Worth. Water was high with lots of flow from recent rains. Did manage to catch a few Longear Perch and Sunfish! Looks like the fly rod will be made readily available for more side trips while on the commute home from the day job!

Micro Fly Rod Fishing at Kroger Pond

Micro Fly Rod Fishing at Kroger Pond this evening. Bite was good on little Bass and Bluegill. Foam Grasshopper in Size 16 worked well, but ended up losing the fishing fly to a “Tree Fish”! Switched to a Tenkara Fly and was able to continue to hook up with the little Bass and Bluegill. Turtles Skilled at Stealing Your Bait! #waterwolfcamera #waterwolf

Fished the North Pond at Celebration this evening. Brought bread for bait and the Water Wolf Camera to capture the underwater action. Got a number of video clips; still putting the video together. But, did want to get this clip out… it shows one turtle skillfully stealing our bait without getting itself hooked! Thought it was a fluke but, we saw several other turtles make the same move… position the baited hook in their mouth so the hook pulls free when they pull the line with their front leg. Ended up striking out; had one Catfish on the line but our light wire hook was not enough to hold the Catfish.  Luckily we did get it on video. Will get it posted later… likely next week. Trying to hit Texoma tomorrow!
