Struck Out This Round.... #waterlooparkpond

Cold and breezy this morning; was itching to get a round of fishing in before the work week started. Made the run to Denison but struck out at Waterloo Park Pond. Had several light strikes and one hook up but ended up losing it soon after. No worries… still good to get outside and go fishing!

  • Location: Waterloo Park Pond (Denison)
  • Time: 08:00 – 12:00
  • Weax: Clear, “Multi-Layers”, Breezy
  • Rod: Redington Classic Trout 5wt – 9′
  • Reel: Echo Ion 4/5 – 6wt Flyline

 

Comments:

  • Cold morning with breezy conditions coming from the NNW. Did not see any risers like in other trips past.
  • Always a tough go after the first week of stocking the pond. In this case, this was the third week which means Salmon Eggs are preferred over fishing flies.
  • Did try a number of fishing flies of which the Tandem Rig Black Near Deere and trailing FB GRHEN in size 16 and the Tandem Rig Black Near Deere and a trailing Red San Juan Worm got hits… very light hits.
  • Next stocking is next weekend.. need to keep that in mind next round!

  • But, did have one trout on the line briefly – Tandem Rig Black Near Deere and FB GRHEN

More fun catching Bass on the fly with the Mardis Gras Near Deere. Caught ten this time in just under an hour. But, had to call it quits early to go on a pizza run for dinner. No worries… still beats working! Playing the next few days by ear; will see what the change in weather brings. Pattern that worked for us yesterday and today was a fishing fly that simulated a small bait fish 1-1/2 to 2″ in length. If not fly fishing, would go with a small Road Runner of Crappie Jig on a steady retrieve using Ultralight Spinning Gear.

Bass and Bluegill This Round

Tested out a new fly pattern – no name for it yet. Caught a Bass and lost a Bass, then switched to damsel flies and caught Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish.  Will tweak the new fly pattern more, and “test” it out again. Was good to see lots of fish near shore in their beds. Looked like the bigger Bluegill were further out from shore this year. Regardless, makes for some good fly casting practice for distance… Fun stuff!

Another Quick Trip... Trout Fishing Towne Lake in McKinney

Really nice day! Still have video to edit but did limit out at Towne Lake in McKinney; caught but released five Rainbow Trout that went for an Olive Near Deere using the same setup as we used yesterday at Murphy – Corqs Strike Indicator and a Near Deere set 3 feet below it. Dead drift worked as well as a few short pull retrieves. Short on time but still a fun time… plus Charlie the Maltese Puppy got to see his first… hopefully many more to come, Rainbow Trout! Video still in the works; will post on our YouTube Channel when done. But, for tonight, we are chillin and grillin steaks and winding down this weekend!

Kayak Fishing : Texoma

Good to know!     hurricanecraig: Texoma Fished Texoma this morning from 6:30 until about noon. Water was 61 degrees. We launched at Eisenhower state park. I was trying to catch black bass but caught crappie and striper before I caught my first ever smallmouth before leaving. It was tiny. The big schools of females have made their push up most creeks last week and the week before, and with this rain a lot of hybrids will show up as well. Bent Back Clouser Variant Worked!

Tested out a new pattern… a Bent Back Clouser Variant. This one uses a weighted keel instead of dumbbell eyes or bead chain, and the hook shank is bent back slightly. Worked well today at Sonic Pond! Tried it at Bethany Lakes, yesterday with some success. Today was much better. Used a larger hook and flashy chenille instead of flashy tinsel. Stay tuned for the fly tying demo on how to tie one!
