Quick Trip to Bethany Gets a Trout and a Bass! #flyfishing #switchrod

Short on time today but was able to make a quick trip to Bethany Lakes. Caught a trout on a Griffith’s Gnat, missed a couple more, and then decided that my mojo was off and went for a couple of casts in the Main Pond with the Switch Rod and a Near Deere. Mojo came back with a Bass caught on the fly!

PS: Great meeting TFF’s zenmic this evening!

Log Book Entry: 1/2/17

  • Bethany Lakes – Pond C, Main Pond (Allen)
  • Time: 17:30 – 19:00
  • Weax: Clear, Short Sleeves, Calm
  • Rod: Cabelas TLR Switch Rod 6wt – 11′
  • Reel: Lamson Liquid 4 – 5wt RIO Switch Chucker Spey Line

 

Comments:

  • More sight casting to passing schools of trout. Schools were roaming the pond but tending to the NW side of Pond C where someone was chumming with bread.
  • Hatch was in progress but schools were not staying in the area we fished by the pier for very long. Only a short window to sight cast, and then the trout were gone.
  • Similar to yesterday, the trout were chasing fishing flies as the fly line was picked up for the next cast.
  • Later, moved to the Main Pond for a chance at Bass. Did catch one using a steady retrieve.

 

Landed:

  • 1 Rainbow Trout – 10″ – COAF Griffith’s Gnat – Sz 16
  • 1 Largemouth Bass – 12″ – Olive Near Deere – Sz 10 at 1/124oz

More fun catching Bass on the fly with the Mardis Gras Near Deere. Caught ten this time in just under an hour. But, had to call it quits early to go on a pizza run for dinner. No worries… still beats working! Playing the next few days by ear; will see what the change in weather brings. Pattern that worked for us yesterday and today was a fishing fly that simulated a small bait fish 1-1/2 to 2″ in length. If not fly fishing, would go with a small Road Runner of Crappie Jig on a steady retrieve using Ultralight Spinning Gear.

Bass and Bluegill This Round

Tested out a new fly pattern – no name for it yet. Caught a Bass and lost a Bass, then switched to damsel flies and caught Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish.  Will tweak the new fly pattern more, and “test” it out again. Was good to see lots of fish near shore in their beds. Looked like the bigger Bluegill were further out from shore this year. Regardless, makes for some good fly casting practice for distance… Fun stuff!

Another Quick Trip... Trout Fishing Towne Lake in McKinney

Really nice day! Still have video to edit but did limit out at Towne Lake in McKinney; caught but released five Rainbow Trout that went for an Olive Near Deere using the same setup as we used yesterday at Murphy – Corqs Strike Indicator and a Near Deere set 3 feet below it. Dead drift worked as well as a few short pull retrieves. Short on time but still a fun time… plus Charlie the Maltese Puppy got to see his first… hopefully many more to come, Rainbow Trout! Video still in the works; will post on our YouTube Channel when done. But, for tonight, we are chillin and grillin steaks and winding down this weekend!

Kayak Fishing : Texoma

Good to know!     hurricanecraig: Texoma Fished Texoma this morning from 6:30 until about noon. Water was 61 degrees. We launched at Eisenhower state park. I was trying to catch black bass but caught crappie and striper before I caught my first ever smallmouth before leaving. It was tiny. Bent Back Clouser Variant Worked!

Tested out a new pattern… a Bent Back Clouser Variant. This one uses a weighted keel instead of dumbbell eyes or bead chain, and the hook shank is bent back slightly. Worked well today at Sonic Pond! Tried it at Bethany Lakes, yesterday with some success. Today was much better. Used a larger hook and flashy chenille instead of flashy tinsel. Stay tuned for the fly tying demo on how to tie one!
