Quick Trip to Bethany Gets a Trout and a Bass! #flyfishing #switchrod

Short on time today but was able to make a quick trip to Bethany Lakes. Caught a trout on a Griffith’s Gnat, missed a couple more, and then decided that my mojo was off and went for a couple of casts in the Main Pond with the Switch Rod and a Near Deere. Mojo came back with a Bass caught on the fly!

PS: Great meeting TFF’s zenmic this evening!

Log Book Entry: 1/2/17

  • Bethany Lakes – Pond C, Main Pond (Allen)
  • Time: 17:30 – 19:00
  • Weax: Clear, Short Sleeves, Calm
  • Rod: Cabelas TLR Switch Rod 6wt – 11′
  • Reel: Lamson Liquid 4 – 5wt RIO Switch Chucker Spey Line

 

Comments:

  • More sight casting to passing schools of trout. Schools were roaming the pond but tending to the NW side of Pond C where someone was chumming with bread.
  • Hatch was in progress but schools were not staying in the area we fished by the pier for very long. Only a short window to sight cast, and then the trout were gone.
  • Similar to yesterday, the trout were chasing fishing flies as the fly line was picked up for the next cast.
  • Later, moved to the Main Pond for a chance at Bass. Did catch one using a steady retrieve.

 

Landed:

  • 1 Rainbow Trout – 10″ – COAF Griffith’s Gnat – Sz 16
  • 1 Largemouth Bass – 12″ – Olive Near Deere – Sz 10 at 1/124oz

Was out fishing a local creek earlier this week. Noted the Iwana Tenkara Rod that we have been eyeing for several years was at our price point… $119 plus $14 for shipping. Order is in… now waiting for delivery. More on Squaw Creek…     Littlefeather: Re: Squaw Creek Tilapia I've not been to Squaw since Winter but caught a whole box of Tilapia and big channel cats. Squaw is the hottest water lake I've ever fished so Winter really pays off! Generally in the warmer months almost every fish in the lake goes as far up the river as they can go so they escape the hot power plant water circulating. Sometime you can just step from one boat to the next to the next up the river in the Summer. I wouldn't think the bank fishing areas would be very good right now but January and February should be non-stop action. We generally just use a slip float, small hook, and regular old worms. Cold Morning at Bethany... "Green Trout Anyone" #flyfishing

The “illusive Green Trout” Was going for Rainbow Trout at Bethany Lakes this morning but was not able to catch any. Did catch a Shellcracker and two Bass aka “Green Trout”! Caught the fish using an Olive Near Deere. Did get two Trout to strike a Griffith’s Gnat but was not able to set the hook fast enough. Trout were in the pond and were actively feeding on the surface after about 8AM. However, wind and cold as well as the well positioned trees to hinder a back cast made it hard to cast where the fish were lurking. Cold morning but still had fun!

Fly Tying This Evening... Near Deere and San Juan Worm Balls! #flytying

Rain in the forecast and tied up with work related things. No worries, got a round of fly tying in to start the weekend. Opted for more Olive Dear Deere and San Juan Worm Balls.
