Hit some spawning grounds before the wind got bad. Before I arrived at my destination, I was dipping some of the obvious structure in 7-18 ft. Found three in those depths. I got to my spot where they spawned in 2007. Rammed my boat in the wicked mess of old vegetation and that was my anchor. First drop of the Jig I landed what was in the picture, and as I figured, they were there and thick. After 20 minutes of goofing around I decided to hop in the water and Wade. That was definitely the ticket for getting these fish out of that thick stuff. And it's a heck of a lot more fun. 1-3 ft. Most were 1.5 to 2 foot deep on willows and timber. I fished less than 2 hours in super secure secret location, and managed 33 crappie. 13-16 inch average. Males were 13-14 and females were 14-16 inches. Black and chartreuse definitely worked better than white and chartreuse. thump buddies soft plastics was what I was using on 1/16 oz jig head and 8 lb mono. Pink head on the jig.

Able to get a round of fishing in this evening. Caught Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish while fly fishing at Bethany Lakes. Went with a Foam Grasshopper to get them today! Celebration Park East Pond...

Fished Celebration Park East Pond yesterday using bread for bait and the Daiwa Sealine Surf Casting Rod and Penn Squall 15 Reel. Made a change in how we normally fish bread; instead of forming a bread ball around a J Hook, wrapped the bread in cheese cloth and then secured it to a Circle Hook. Had a number of strikes but no hook ups until we removed the weight we were using and free-lined the bait. Good thing the surf casting rod/reel combo had no issues casting a weightless baited hook! Soon after started getting strikes and hook ups. Unfortunately, it was well past dark, so we were unable to get a video of the action and the cell phone battery was low so no pictures either. One Catfish was a Bruiser; the other Catfish went about 17″ in length. Decided to go back tonight and see if we could get another Catfish before it got too dark for filming. Question: How Do We Attach a Line to a Tenkara Lillian?

Question from one of our Readers asking how we attach our line to a Tenkara rod’s lillian. We use a loop to loop connection to attach our line. One loop is formed by the lillian; the other loop is from the braided line that we use when fishing with a Tenkara rod. When we use a level line, we attach a 10″-12″ piece of monofilament line to the level line with a nail knot, and then form a loop on the other end of the monofilament using a perfection loop knot. Latest Update from OZ! #flyfishing

Lots of rain recently has us indoors for the time being. Luckily, others are able to get a round or two fishing in their areas. Of note, is the latest update from our friend Steven in Australia! Looks like the fish are biting. Always great to hear from Steven and how the bite is going in OZ! “Our weather is all over the place at the moment–hot, cold but not a lot of rain. It’s pretty windy outside so we might make sure nothing is in risk of blowing away. Most of the local creeks and streams are pretty low and clear. The trout are there but very skittish. I’ve fished the Badger Creek nearby and caught and released a few nice brown trout recently. I used my 8 foot tenkara rod and a Royal Humpy with a nymph on a dropper. I fished the Stevenson River at Marysville a few days ago. Again, very low and clear but I hooked and lost a few trout, a couple that were probably well over the pound mark as they pulled really hard on the 12 foot tenkara rod. COAF Field Team Vlog #18 – “Back to LLELA!”

Made it back to Lake Lewisville Ecological Learning Area. Used the 6wt Switch Rod and fished downriver from the tailrace. Caught a Bass and several Longear (we think they were Longear). A Bass and one Longear went for a Clouser Minnow. Other Longear went for the Near Deere and GRHEN Tandem Rig that we used in the Red Zone on the Lower Mountain Fork several weeks ago. Lost a number of fish while reeling them in. They were able to throw the hook as soon as any slack in the line happened. Forgot the rig we were using was barbless per the Red Zone requirement. Overall, had a great time… at times had a section of the river to myself. Also, met another fly fisherman and a some good fishing things to talk about as well as a Bald Eagle flew by us! Cool stuff especially in the middle of the DFW Metroplex!

Hooked a couple of bowfin that I thought were bass and luckily they pulled off. Make it back to deep hole near bridge and get thumped on swimbait but miss. Throw 10 inch power worm to same spot and let sink to bottom before starting to crawl it back. I'm reeling in slack and not feeling my bait. I'm watching my line and I have the distinct impression that its slowly moving at an angle and towards me. Reel more slack and then go into hyperdrive as my line is definitely moving towards me. By the time I've got all the slack reeled in, my line is under me and I laid into it. I almost get rod jerked out of my hands as fish shoots to other side of kayak and my rod is bent over the gunnel which is almost to the water as I'm leaning out the other side of kayak trying to g...

Texas Rainbow Trout Fishing | Found a Pattern, Limited Out

After several quick trips in the late afternoon/evening fishing for Texas Rainbow Trout that were stocked at Bethany Lakes last Wednesday, finally limited out on a cold Saturday morning. Trout were actively feeding on something. Even chased but turned away from lures we casted. Trout were picky with one caught on a Rubber Legged Near Deere fished motionless under a Bubble Fly Rig, and then another caught on a Griffith’s Gnat using the same rig. As luck had it, my reel broke… the bail spring. Switched to other rods before settling on the fly rod, fishing the Near Deere with a “twitchy twitch” retrieve. For some reason, the trout wanted movement! After limiting out, did some catch and release to see if the pattern held. By mid-morning, they wanted the Generic Black Midge Dry Fly in size 16… fished dry as well as wet and changing from a no retrieve to a short pull retrieve. Later, stopped by in the evening… no lure, no fishing flies, trout were wanting corn. LOL! Did see ...
