Updates from Australia... Trout Fishing Report!

Weekend outlook has the Field Team in limbo; rain is in the forecast so we may shift to other fishing related things like tying more fishing flies. We lost a number of fishing flies on our last fishing trip courtesy of the trees and some of the trout at Turner Falls!

Regardless of the weather in our area, it looks like others are catching Trout to include our friend Steve in Australia! Here is his latest fishing report and pictures!

I went fishing last Friday. Drove up to Marysville and fished the lake until it got light. Not much activity and only got a few plucks and following trout using two North Country Spiders ( Snipe and Purple and a Partridge and Orange ). Walked up the nearby Stevenson River and caught and released a small wild rainbow trout on the Snipe and Purple. After breakfast at the local bakery, I  drove to the nearby Acheron River where I picked up a nice wild Brown trout  about 10 inches on a floating Basin Hopper. Next , I drove to Warburton via the Acheron Way which follows that river part of the way. Nice looking spots near the road but I was limited by not having waders. Fished the Yarra River at Warburton and caught another wild brown trout about 11 inches on a Black Woolly Worm. The Yarra River is around 50 metres across there and it was a change from the small creeks that I normally fish around Healesville. I can see myself fishing the Yarra River more often in the future.

TBT time Friday evening fishing an old favorite of ours… the Betts Bream Getter. It’s the fishing fly we derived the Foam Spider pattern we tie. This one we picked up at Cabelas but unfourtunately lost it to a snag. Will have to either buy another or tie one using the kit we bought last year from Waspi! No worries though had a great time fishing it for Bass and Bluegill. Key tips this round when fishing the Betts Bream Getter: First, stand-off from the bank about 5 to 10 yards and work the area near the bank. Anticipate a strike. If none, then proceed closer and work the pond casting out as well as along the bank. Second, wait to start the retrieve 5 to 10 counts, letting the fishing fly sit motionless. Oftentimes, a strike will happen. Next, start the retrieve with short pulls on the fly line to create a stop and go motion. Do pause between pulls, and do watch for a fish trailing behind it. Simple Fly Tying Pattern | Pat's Rubber Leg Variant

Been trying to tie the Pat’s Rubber Leg by watching others tie the pattern. So far, has been a rough go. But, did make some adjustments to one variant that has an extended body, and then used a tying method to attach the legs that is easier for yours truly… same method I use to tie legs on a Foam Spider/Grasshopper. Do check back… plan to “test” it out at a local pond, and then tie more if it produces a fish or two. And then, hopefully… on to the Blue River and/or local stocked trout! More to come!

Cheese Cloth and Bread as Bait

Received a question about how we used cheese cloth when fishing with bread as bait. Below is a brief summary of what how we do this: Form a bread ball with the bread, Then, place it in the middle of a 4″ x 4″ piece of cheese cloth, Next, take two opposing corners of the cheese cloth, pull them together and thread them on to a Circle Hook. Do the same with the remaining corners of the cheese cloth. With all four corners threaded on to the Circle Cook, twist the bread ball covered with cheese cloth around to tighten the cloth. Finally, pass the hook once through the bread ball, not in the middle but more on the side. This will keep it from twisting off. That’s it… Good luck!

Old Abu Garcia Inline Spinner Catches 20+ Fish | Vintage Lure Series - Round 3

Another round of fishing in the ongoing Vintage Lure Series where I find old lures at antique stores and fish them using ultralight casting gear aka Bait Finesse System (BFS) Fishing. So far, I have fished the following lures and posted videos on a playlist on YouTube - see video player at the end of this post. Lures fished so far: Round 1 - Cisco Kid Diver - Caught and released 7+ Bass Round 2 - Rapala Floating Minnow - Caught and released multiple Bass Round 3 - Abu Garcia Inline Spinner - Caught and release 20+ Bass For Round 3, I fished an inline spinner that was made around the 1960s. Working the bank of a local pond  which is more like a lake in size and affectionately called Lake Glenn after yours truly. The bite was steady with 20+ fish caught and released. It was Bass and Bluegill.  The Bass were small and scrappy; the Bluegill were small as well except for one section of the pond that held some Bruiser Bluegill. Do checkout the video! Getting Started Fly Fishing | Casting Quality Fly Line with a Bamboo Stake...?

That time of year when fishing questions start coming in. This one relates to getting started in fly fishing – specifically, our thoughts on budgeting for a fly rod/reel combo. In this video, the introduction has a past video playing in the background… yours truly is casting a OPST Commando Head and no rod or reel at the local pond. It’s a quality line that makes for some nice casting especially when our back cast is clobbered. Then, I describe a fly line that I will demo casting using a bamboo stake like the ones used to support tomato plants in a garden. If a quality fly line can be cast using a stiff bamboo stake, then a good fly rod should easily cast the same fly line. PS: Our suggestion has remained constant over the years… in general, we like to first purchase a quality fly line, then will buy the fly rod, and then either buy the reel last or repurpose one we already have.
