Slight delay in posting. Went on a cruise to the Gulf of Mexico. Have videos and pictures, but did not go fishing. Instead, tended toward doing activities like in the picture below… great stuff!
Keep this one handy. Stocking points posted on the Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area Facebook page! Here is a link if you have a Facebook account… Link. Else, here are pictures for reference from their site:
Video snippet showing how I switch the Martin Fly Reel from left to right hand retrieve. Works for similar click-pawl drag single action, fly reels. For more details, see the full video Try These Two Modifications for the Martin Fly Fishing Combo
Saturday started with rain but by afternoon all had passed, decided to go pond fishing at the local pond with the old Redington Pursuit 4wt Fly Rod with Ross Flystart 2 Reel. Fished a Pat’s Rubber Leg, Near Deere, and Guadalupana without success. Thought Bass would be biting given temps in the high 60 to low 70s. Wind was brutal, else a really nice day to be outdoors fishing! Ended up playing with the little Bluegill lurking by the Waterfall; strikes on a Griffith’s Gnat and Black Midge. No Bruisers but great practice for light striking trout!
More tinkering around with ice fishing rod components. For ease of reference, calling it the Do It Yourself (DIY) Tanago Rod. Going to use it for Micro Fishing; hopefully to catch one of those “guppy” looking fish! Easy to make… used a 20″ solid fiberglass ice fishing rod, a 12″ wooden handle, and a braided cord for the lillian. Add some 2 pound test mono – smallest line in the tackle box, ready to try it out! DIY Tanago Rod compared to Micro Fly Rods
Well our day jobs as well as other commitments has us sidelined this week. That said, if you cannot go fishing, can still talk fishing! Here is a quick post – video snippet, from our Instagram site (@coaf.field.team) that talks fishing! No #fishing …been tied up with work and other things. Still can talk about it. Last two rounds been #kayakfishing …can’t wait to get out again! A post shared by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on May 17, 2017 at 9:57pm PDT
Pink and White Near Deere Quick trip to Bethany for some Switch Rod casting practice this evening. Managed three Bass that went for a White Near Deere this round. Similar to the “swing the rod slowly retrieve” that worked on the trout at Waterloo in Denison and at Frisco Commons, it worked on the Bass at Bethany as well! Need to keep this in mind for the Saturday’s Trout Derbies. Although there are two scheduled, will likely give Murphy’s Trout Roundup a try! Fun stuff!
After only a strike and a miss, decided to post a livestream while trout fishing at Murphy City Complex Pond. Saw lots of folks, with limits being taken on PowerBait and PowerWorms as well as lures. Gold Super Duper worked for some in the morning. Later, Silver Super Dupers were getting bit. Key was to cast mid-pond , let the lure sink, and retrieve slow... much slower than the retrieve that worked last weekend in McKinney's Towne Lake.
Been a tough week to go fishing but made a quick trip after working out this morning. Used the Micro Fly Rod and a Foam Grasshopper in Size 14 to catch little Sunfish and Bluegill at Celebration Park’s North Pond. Most were small (micro size) but did get several bigger ones in the mix. Overall had a fun time, sure beats working! Really liking the Micro Fly Rod concept, too!
Since the run to the Galveston last month, we have been missing the Texas Coast and the saltwater fishing that it offers. Although we have had several rounds of kayak fishing in since then locally, one cannot catch a Shark in Lake Lavon! Luckily, we have several Readers asking about information and lessons learned from out trips to Galveston. Always willing to help other, we collated the our notes and published, “Fishing in Galveston”. Do check it out; we hope it helps others planning a trip to Galveston!
